Library Services and Features


Youth Services

Enhance children's skills through increased educational opportunities. This will be accomplished by offering programs and services that encourage improvements in reading, writing, and verbal communication.
Bring in nationally recognized children's authors and performers for special events.
Separate room for teens and young adults containing computers, fiction, teen magazines, separate work tables, and homework ready reference.
Children's room to double in size from old room, containing a room for crafts /story hours, including small tables, washable flooring, and comfortable seating.
There will be an enlarged parenting collection.
The Children's room will have restrooms with smaller-sized toilets & sinks and will be large enough to allow a caretaker with a stroller. Changing tables will be available in all restrooms.
There will be a desk in the public area for a children's librarian.
Computers with library catalog, internet access, and "edutainment" software will be available for children and teens.

 

Senior Services

Well lit section on main floor, with large-print items, information on retirement planning, travel services, health issues, a bulletin-board for relevant fliers, etc.
Comfortable chairs with arms.

Services to speakers of other languages

Collection of books, DVDs, magazines, and news journals in other languages.
Collection of items to learn English, such as print items, CDs, DVDs, and other media.
Information about immigration laws.
Liaison information with area organizations such as Neighbors Link and local churches.
Potential for ESL classes.

 

Reading Room

The Reading Room will have shelving for periodicals and several study tables. This room will be a "silent" room. This is a heavily-requested feature by library users who would like to find peace and solitude!
There will be individual comfortable chairs.


Going Green

The Village Board has gone green by installing and utilizing a geo-thermal HVAC system in the Library.
The entire building will utilize low-VOC paint, energy-efficient lighting, thermal windows, angled overhangs to take advantage of natural heat from the sun, and may use flooring made of recycled materials.

Other Special Features

Large group meeting room for performances and other gatherings. This room will be available for rental to local groups. It will have a drop-down screen, 100 chairs, appropriate lighting for presentations, a podium, black-out shades, and a high-tech AV /sound system. The room may also be used for art exhibits.
One smaller-group meeting room to be used for Library Board meetings, staff meetings, and may serve as a "green room" for performers renting the larger community room. This smaller room may also be available for rental to local groups.
Two small study rooms with study carrels that can seat 2 people. These rooms will be available at no charge for short periods.
Separate Circulation workroom for sorting mail, organizing off-desk activities for clerks, discharging items, sorting and preparing interloans, and for private space to speak with patrons.
Technical Services work room set up for 2-3 staff members to order and process new items (cover books, label all new items, link to computer records, reconcile invoices for new acquisitions).
Atrium/lobby area will have a display area for community groups to post informational flyers and for exhibits.
Check out desk will have self-check out machine for those who would prefer to help themselves or are pressed for time.
The new building will be 100% handicapped accessible, including restrooms and all staff areas, and there will be an elevator leading to the second floor.
Terrace area outside the community room may be utilized for receptions prior to performances or presentations.
Proposed patio outside the west entrance of the building (facing Shoppers Park) will have benches for patrons to relax in comfort outside, a children's butterfly garden, and potted plantings.

The Library will offer approximately twice as many public access computers as previously provided. Wireless access will be available for patrons who would like to use their own laptops.
