What we do
The Foundation for the Mt. Kisco Public Library considers itself to be a primary champion of preserving and strengthening “literacy” -- and all that defines literacy in the 21st century -- and making it accessible to all segments of the Mt. Kisco community.
We are a network of concerned residents and business owners who appreciate the value of a strong, complete and modern public library as a critical component of our community. The public library is as important to our infrastructure, our property values, and the long-term vitality and relevancy of our community as is on-the-ready police and fire departments, progressive schools, well-maintained parks and diverse recreational opportunities, attentive public works, and conscientious elected and appointed public servants.
Anyone who still thinks that the public library is just a place to borrow books or browse through a favorite magazine or newspaper hasn't been inside a public library in a long time!
Yes, the Mt. Kisco Public Library still has books, thousands of them. It still has periodicals and reference materials, too. But many “traditional” public library resources are now accessible primarily or exclusively through digital media and/or online databases. These cost hundreds or thousands of dollars a year in subscription fees. Providing access to these tools, free-of-charge to any one who walks through the Library’s front doors, is essential to keeping the library current, relevant and competitive. That is why you’ll also find free, public-access computer terminals in every reading room of the library.
But taxes alone don’t, can’t and shouldn’t pay for all that the Mt. Kisco Public Library needs to meet its patrons’ needs. That’s why the Foundation also does fundraising and has a very ambitious goal of raising at least $1,000,000. If ever there was an appropriate nomenclature for this organization, "Foundation" is most appropriate.
